Wow, my first day at Scooby!  Tomas picked me up at 11:45 and went to the shelter.  On the weekends, work at Scooby doesn’t start until later in the morning.  On week days, work starts around 9:30.

We sat in the kitchen and had a coffee.  He then gave me the grand tour and showed me how everything needed to be cleaned.

We started cleaning paddock 1.  There was a wounded dog, not bad but still something I would lose my mind over back home.  The dogs were very excited to see another person.  When we finished picking up the poop, scrubbing the floor and washing and drying it we went to paddock 2. There are more dogs in paddock 2 than 1 and much more hyper.  Pele, who was fixed male was mounting this poor female.  She was not impressed.  Tomas asked me to stay out in the yard with them, as having them running around inside, makes cleaning much more difficult.

After lunch I cleaned the puppy room.  There are four pups.  One German Sheppard and three mixed.  As I cleaned the pups, Tomas did the other paddocks.

All the dogs are so beautiful.  I have no idea how someone could not want them.  They are all so loving.  It makes me so sad.  There is a constant shuffle for power in the paddocks.  Scooby places dogs as best as they can see in each paddock, but there are dogs that want to start trouble no matter what.  As Fermin said, “If the dogs want to cause trouble.  They will cause trouble."

One girl, who I named Bella was badly wounded in a dog fight three days before I arrived.

We did the feeding in the paddocks.  Tomas asked me to watch paddock 3 and 4 and to break up any fights while they were eating.  Yikes!  I was shouting non-stop in the beginning.  We did allow the more timid dogs to eat first before we let the others in.  And that is when you hear the growling.  Nothing serious, just loud, aggressive growls.

Once dinner was done, I told Maria Jose that I wasn’t leaving until I saw Lorenzo.  Lorenzo is the Galgo who I have had my eye on since I first started planning my trip to Scooby.  I am not sure if he will accept me and allow me to adopt him as his write up on the Scooby adoption page, along with the other timid dogs was, “I've probably mentioned it before, but it is something that I can't bear and it is when we collect an animal and just as you try to caress him the animal crawls and begins to urinate himself of fear, it is really very sad and one thinks in what must this poor animal have gone through to have this type of reaction, in Scooby we have seen it enough times basically in Galgos but also with other type of dogs, many times they recover themselves and in the end they finish trusting the human race, but there are other times when this is not so and here is where you enter the picture, special people who seek a special dog, we need you to adopt one of these of these super timid animals and who desperately need a home, you'll need to be patient but they need you, the truth is that it is very hard to observe them every day in their cage looking as though they wanted to disappear through the wall, full of spare beds for they lay all together in one or two them. They are dogs that will need all your understanding and love but, aren't they exactly the type of animals who need us most? You will probably need the aid of some specialist but when manage to earn his trust, I am sure that you'll be able to feel proud of yourselves because you will have given a good life to an animal who never had it. Thanks in advance because I know you are there, all those special people who deserve a special animal.”    This broke my heart and I knew Lorenzo needed a loving home and I wanted to give him that.

Lorenzo is in a quarantine with about 6 other dogs, all timid.  Although they were very friendly with me.  Lorenzo was very, very scared.  Maris Jose let me pet him.  Every time I touched him, he flinched.  He was so so scared.  I hope to spend some more time with him tomorrow.  He is so beautiful in real life.  The most amazing face.  I told him had to love me to come to Canada… sadly I don’t think he will trust me enough by the time I leave.  I will try but he is far from trusting anyone.   I have nicknamed Lorenzo’s quarantine, the bachelor pad. All males and absolutely beautiful.  One of the dogs fancies peeing on me… trying to be my boss.  Little monster!  And then the white Galgo.  He is so fantastic and loving.
